1.0 Introduction

Welcome to Starship Avalon's Protocol Training Course. This course material will hopefully equip you with the basic, yet extremely important, knowledge that makes a top-notch cadet.

2.0 Ranks

Probabably the most important protocol to remember is the ranking system. In this section we will show all the different ranks in Starship Avalon and explain their purpose. As well we'll discuss how to properly deal with them.

Officer Ranks
Flag Officers
	Grand Fleet Admiral	Highest Rank. Given only during war time to the head coordinator of a military
	Fleet Admiral	Highest non wartime rank reporting directly to the Imperial ord Council
	Admiral	In large militaries the Admirals are generally the leaders of the large fleets reporting directly to the Fleet Admiral or Head of State
	Vice Admiral	Vice Admirals' are generally running projects in large militaries. In small militaries they routinely will do the jobs of admirals reporting to a single Admiral
	Rear Admiral	Rear Admirals' usually are Station or Planetary Commanders.
	Commodore	Commodores are generally the commanders of small battle groups. Usually still commanding a ship they have been tasked with strategically deploying usually a small fleet of 1-8 additional vessels
Senior Line Officers
	Fleet Captain	On vessels with more then one captain the fleet captain has a white division color to distinguish
	Captain	Captains' are the leaders of ships, divisions on starbases and planets, and usually attaches to Admirals
	Commander	Commanders usually run divisions and provide executive officer duties aboard ships or installations
	Acting Commander	Acting Commanders are temporary positions designed to fill in until the acting staff meets requirements to achieve the full rank, someone else is promoted to the position, or the position is disolved.
	Lieutenant Commander	Lieutenant Commanders are usually division heads, section heads, or on smaller crews they provide 3rd in Command roles
	Acting Lieutenant Commander	Acting Lieutenant Commanders are temporary positions designed to fill in until the acting staff meets requirements to achieve the full rank, someone else is promoted to the position, or the position is disolved.
Junior Line Officers
	Lieutenant	Lieutenants are generally section heads or assistant section heads
	Acting Lieutenant	Acting Lieutenants are temporary positions designed to fill in until the acting staff meets requirements to achieve the full rank, someone else is promoted to the position, or the position is disolved.
	Lieutenant Junior-Grade	Lieutenant JGs usually are assistant section heads
	Acting Lieutenant Junior Grade	Acting Lieutenants' Junior Grade are temporary positions designed to fill in until the acting staff meets requirements to achieve the full rank, someone else is promoted to the position, or the position is disolved.
	Ensign	Ensigns are usually new officer recruits and will generally be shuffled around sections as needed
	Acting Ensign	Acting Ensigns are temporary positions designed to fill in until the acting staff meets requirements to achieve the full rank, someone else is promoted to the position, or the position is disolved.
	Officer Cadet	Officer candidates are considered Officer Cadets for the duration of their training.
Warrant Officers
	Chief Warrant Officer	Warrant Officers generally are senior non-commissioned staff who have progressed through the enlisted ranks but never sought or were granted a commission. They are eligible to take on section or division head positions. To make it to the rank of warrant officer deserves much admiration as it is a long, hard road, that few manage to complete

Enlisted Ranks
Chiefs
	> Master Chief Petty Officer of the TIFC	Generally the Master Chief Petty Officer of the TIFC is the senior enlisted member of a ship and provides a liason role with the officers in times of war
	Master Chief Petty Officer	Generally the Master Chief Petty Officer is the senior enlisted member of a ship and provides a liason role with the officers
	Acting Master Chief Petty Officer	Acting Master Chief Petty Officers are temporary positions designed to fill in until the acting staff meets requirements to achieve the full rank, someone else is promoted to the position, or the position is disolved.
	Senior Chief Petty Officer	Senior Chief Petty Officers are section heads when an officer isn't running the section and usually are responsible for 3-4 crew members
	Acting Senior Chief Petty Officer	Acting Senior Chief Petty Officers are temporary positions designed to fill in until the acting staff meets requirements to achieve the full rank, someone else is promoted to the position, or the position is disolved.
	Chief Petty Officer	Chief Petty Officers are section heads when an officer isn't running the section and usually are responsible for 3-4 crew members

Petty Officers
	Petty Officer 1st Class	Petty Officers are qualified enlisted personnel who perform various duties onboard the ship
	Petty Officer 2nd Class
	Petty Officer 3rd Class
Crewmen
	Crewman	Crewmen are basic enlistees who have either just completed or are still completing their on-the-job training
	Crewman Apprentice
	Crewman Recruit
Cadets
	Cadet Squad Leader	Cadet Squad Leaders are the top graduates of a class invited to remain an extra year to train their classmates along with the other faculty
	Cadet Squad XO	Cadet Squad 2nd In Commands' are responsible for assisting the Cadet Squad Leader in their duties. They are a 3rd Year Cadet picked by the Leader
	3rd Year Cadet	Cadets are the basic recruits in Starship Avalon who are training to qualify as crew members
	2nd Year Cadet
	1st Year Cadet
	Probationary Cadet	Probationary Cadets are borderline candidates who are given a trial period of 1-3 weeks.  During the probationary period if the cadet is found to not be up to Starship Avalon standards they will be terminated, otherwise they are promoted to a 1st Year Cadet at the end of the trial period.

Acting Ranks

The Imperial Government has authorized the use of field promotions to fill needed positions.  These promotions are not considered permanent and have no basis upon the person's service record except in terms of experience.  An acting rank is considered the same rank as its non-acting component EXCEPT in relation to the non-acting rank which the acting rank is considered to be subordinate to.  As such an Acting Lieutenant would still consider a full Lieutenant to be his/her superior officer.

3.0.1 By far the most important is how you address a superior. You should always address a senior officer by their rank first, and then sir/ma'am or their rank in the remainder of the conversation.

3.0.2 If there is not a critical situation in progress, when one sees the [#] Captain on the bridge notification they should rise to their feet and remain at attention until the Commanding Officer allows everyone to sit or sits him or herself.

3.0.3 When the Commanding Officer enters a room where off duty personnel are present (such as the lounge), all personnel are to rise to attention until the Commanding Officer allows everyone to sits or sits him or herself.

3.0.4 - Warrant Officers are one of the hardest ranks to achieve. This is due to the fact that most Enlisted crew retire before they achieve the rank of Warrant Officer. As such these crew should be treated with the utmost of respect.

3.0.5 - You should ALWAYS ask before entering an office, especially of a superior officer. Same thing goes for quarters. It can be considered a crime IC to enter someone's quarters without their permission (same as breaking and entering).

Subordinates are crew with a rank less then you. They are never to be called inferiors (opposite to superiors) as this is an insult and will most likely get you transfered to a job as an ore miner. Cadets should be referred to by their status and possibly their last name (ie: Cadet or Cadet Foster).  Crewmen should be referred to using the same rule (ie: Crewman or Crewman Foster).  Petty Officers should be referred to as Crewman unless in a formal situation in which their rank group should be used (ie: Crewman or Crewman Foster - formal: Petty Officer or Petty Officer Foster).  Chief Petty Officers should be addressed as chief if a female, and either chief or their last name if a male (ie: Chief or Mister (Mr) Foster).  Warrant Officers should be addressed by their name with the Mister (Mr) prefix regardless of gender (ie: Mr Foster).  Junior Officers should be addressed by their rank or their name with the Mister prefix regardless of gender (ie: Lieutenant or Lieutenant Foster or Mr Foster).  Junior Grade Ranks (Lieutenant Commander and Lieutenant Junior Grade) should always be addressed by the full rank (ie: LtCmdr Foster addressed as Commander).  Senior Officers should be addressed by rank or rank and last name (ie: Commander or Commander Foster).  Flag Officers Should be addressed by the same manner as Senior Officers (ie: Admiral Foster).

When dealing with someone of the same rank it is always best to address them by their rank unless you are in a casual private environment. This however is not the same for enlisted crew. It is quite common for enlisted crew to build up a rapport with each other and they will simply call each other by their names unless there is a crisis.

Each member of the Starship Avalon crew is issued a uniform based on their division and status.  Below are the colors for each person's uniform. Standard Crew - Feline or Canine species.  Marine Crew has only feline but has a dress uniform (lapine), a combat uniform (!SWAT command), and a camo standard uniform (equine). Bovine is the Dress Uniform
