What your character knows....even if you don't

There are some basic aspects of Avalon life that impact your character, or at least impact what your character may think about a certain situation. Just like asking an average person what the G8 Summit is, you are likely to get a response--it is a household name. How educated a person is on a given subject, however, is a different story all together. Here is a compilation of basic terms, phrases, and ideas that your character is likely familiar with (provided your character is not hiding under a rock).

bar

Commbadge: The commbadge is what houses the technology to allow personal communication between person to person and or person to a starship/other. The main technology within a commbadge is the STA (Subspace Transceiver Assembly) which utilises a low-power subspace field emitter and an analog to digital voice encoder, allowing the communication to happen. Typical range from person to person is about 500km, of course person to Starship would be longer due to the Starships superior communication technology. In gameplay, this allows for characters to communicate with each other through whispers, even if they are not within whispering range. It is expected that someone with an incoming communication roleplays receiving the message, if others are in earshot of hearing the device.

Impulse: Impulse Engines are what propel Starships are sub-light speeds. They have two primary functions, one being what was stated above and the second being that they also supply power for various ships systems. During normal operations, full impulse is only one quarter the full speed of light, anything above this may cause potential problem. If the ship travels beyond this the time dialation effects as one approaches the speed of light (1c) will amplify to the point where when comes out of impulse it will be several years in the future.

bar

Outposts: Outposts are observation structures that are usually positioned at the edge of a faction's territory, so that information may be gathered and processed.

bar

Personal Access Data Device (PADD): In our futuristic timeline, there are no such things as books or papers to shuffle around. There are data devices, PADDs, that are about the size of your palm, and can contain about as much information as an encyclopedia. These are common, everyday items, that are often exchanged as easily as one would exchange a memo in an office.

bar

Phaser: Phasers are the main weapons used onboard Kintra Starships and have proven to be very effective in the past. They have three power settings, all of which have difference effects. The low setting when fired will cause pain/unconsciousness for most species, at higher levels the phaser will cause physical damage and the highest level will vaporize a humanoid being. There are also different types of phasers, ranging from small ones to large ones called Phaser Rifles.

bar

Quarters: Quarters are living areas, similar to dorm rooms or apartment flats. Your quarters are where your personal affects are, as well as your sleeping arrangement.

bar

Replicator: Replicators are the main food dispensers onboard Starships. They utilise the technology of mini-transporters to provide and create foods/drinks/items on a molecular scale. Any type of food/drink/item may be ordered as long as it has been programmed into the database.

bar

Starbase: A facility strategically positioned in space used to repair and re-supply starships. There is often a shipyard or drydock facility. Starbases are huge structures that are usually (but not always) in orbit around planets.

bar

Thrusters: Thrusters are the most basic variation of propulsion onboard a Starship. They offer minimal sub-light movement and on a normal basis are used to add to the manageability of a Starship in battle or when travelling in close quarters.

bar

Tricorder: The tricorder is a multipurpose scientific device, which you will find most Officers carrying around. These devices incorporate sensors, computers and different variations of recording and data analysing equipment in a small and portable form. They are extremely versatile and have proven to be very useful among the crew of Starships for variety of tasks. It is important to note that there is a specific Medical Tricorder for the analysis and scanning of patients.

bar

Warp: Warp is probably one of the most important tools to a Starship, because without it; the amount of time it would take from getting to one place to the other would be vast. Warp is created through the Warp Drive, it being the device that drives the primary propulsion system (also providing the main source of power). The Warp Drive uses controlled annihilation of matter and antimatter, which results in a plasma generation that contains the tremendous power to get a Starship to travel faster than light.
